The Leather Cultural Cemter and Traditions

Leather Pride Week Traditions

With the generous cooperation of PRC, the LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District has acquired LeatherWalk, since the District is uniquely positioned to shepherd the event into the future. LeatherWalk was founded in 1992 by Art Tomaszewski, former AEF Board President, Bare Chest Calendar Man and former Mr. Headquarters Leather. Art was inspired to start an event that would raise visibility, comradery and funds for AEF.

In 2001, Sandy ‘Mama’ Reinhardt, a tireless community fundraiser and founding advisor at BCEF, took over event production of LeatherWalk. Mr. San Francisco Leather 2010 Lance Holman took the reins for several years, before passing the baton (or whip) to Folsom Street Events and PRC. While there was no LeatherWalk in 2019, the SF Eagle had a Leather Pride Parade. During the pandemic, PRC agreed to permanently transfer the LeatherWalk name and tradition to the LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District, and in 2021, LeatherWalk and the Leather Pride Parade merged, with LeatherWalk — a project of the Cultural District —  ending at the Leather Pride Fest — presented by the SF Eagle. In 2022 we are proud to continue the tradition of LeatherWalk giving back to the community.

The LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District

LeatherWalk 2022 benefits the LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District, a community institution dedicated to keeping our South of Market neighborhood queer and kinky. The money raised supports the Cultural District’s work, including murals, commemorative sidewalk plaques, promoting our existing businesses, facilitating new ones, activating art and live events both indoors and out and making long-term plans to buy a building for a Leather Community Center.

More info about the Cultural District’s achievements, activities and plans for the future can be found here.
